CNA

CNA Reinsurance is the reinsurance division of CNA Financial that helps manage risk through targeted retroactive and excess liability deals. The division strengthens CNA’s balance sheet via strategic reinsurance.

History of CNA Reinsurance

CNA Reinsurance began as part of CNA Financial, a major US-based commercial insurance company. It focused early on assumed treaty reinsurance and global liability cover.

Over time, the group reshaped its role through exits, transfers, and risk deals. Other key moments of CNA Reinsurance include:

  • 2002: CNA sold its UK reinsurance unit to Tawa UK and exited London
  • 2003: transferred treaty reinsurance renewal rights to Folksamerica Reinsurance
  • 2010: moved $1.6 billion in liabilities to National Indemnity under a $4 billion cap
  • 2014: sold its life and annuity unit to Wilton Re and kept the runoff
  • 2019: Mark James was named chief reinsurance officer to oversee risk and reinsurance
  • 2020: excess workers’ comp liabilities worth $690 million were transferred to Cavello Bay Re
  • 2021: posted strong income of $368 million helped by reinsurance gains and low losses

In its most recent move, CNA Reinsurance continued to clean up old liabilities through runoff deals. These shifts allow the firm to manage risks better and keep a strong financial base.

Reinsurance products and services

CNA Reinsurance offers a range of dealer-focused programs built to grow profit and support long-term goals:

  • dealer equity: helps dealers earn profit when contract sales reach a set level
  • dealer owned warranty corporation (DOWC): supports dealers in forming and managing their own warranty company
  • reinsurance: controlled foreign corporation (CFC): traditional dealer-owned structure with both offshore and onshore setup options
  • reinsurance: non-controlled foreign corporation (NCFC): offers a Bermuda-based shared program with group ownership and shared benefits

These programs help dealers manage risk and build value through strong support and smart design. With many reinsurance awards and years of success, CNA Reinsurance keeps helping dealers win.
