The Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society (CPCU) – Bermuda chapter has increased its annual education award fund to $3,000, from the usual $1,500. According to reports, Ariel Re sponsored the additional $1,500, enabling CPCU–Bermuda to accommodate one more scholar this year.
This annual scholarship helps students pay for their CPCU exams. On top of the examination fee assistance, the CPSU scholarship also provides future casualty underwriters exam process support and guidance, as well as free access to Bermuda CPCU Society networking and education events.
According to scholarship officers, the grant aims to ease the financial burden of students taking their CPCU exams and provide support and mentorship to those who wish to succeed in their reinsurance careers. The scholarship also serves as an opportunity for Bermuda to broaden its talent pool.
“Bermuda is a unique marketplace for an important and fulfilling industry, where leading global reinsurers coexist within a few minutes’ walk of each other,” said a CPCU spokesperson. “The diversity and inclusion committee is dedicated to increasing access and broadening Bermuda’s talent pool, ensuring that the industry’s employee base grows in diversity and represents individuals from all backgrounds.”
Starting in 2022, the scholarship fund was co-founded by CPCU diversity and inclusion chair JayLynn Hines (pictured) with Jenna Burrows, and has been helping reinsurers develop their careers ever since. The scholarship is also a means to give back to the community, it was stated.
“One of the greatest things you can do in life is to help others, no matter what position or title you hold,” said Hines.
Hines said she was proud of how far the careers of Jarita Bassett and Toneka Hayward, who received their scholarship awards in 2022 and 2023, respectively, had gone.
Meanwhile, interested parties may email their application to [email protected], along with their updated résumé and a short personal statement. Applicants must be 18 years old or older, must be a Bermudian or a permanent resident of Bermuda (must provide a permanent residency certificate), and interested in a reinsurance career. The deadline for submission of the application is July 1, 2024.
