New Zealanders travelling to Japan are being urged to contact their airline or travel agent to find out if travel has been disrupted following a recent earthquake and typhoon that has hit the country.

If travel has been disrupted, safetravel.govt.nz is advising Kiwis to ensure they keep all receipts to support their travel insurance claims.

On September 05, Typhoon Jebi hit the west of Japan, causing heavy rains and strong winds and resulting in at least six deaths and many injuries.

Just days after the devastating typhoon, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Japanese Island of Hokkaido. Buildings collapsed and there have been widespread landslides. Local media have reported two casualties, at least 140 people injured and around 40 more missing.

Safetravel.govt.nz added that Kiwis in the affected area, or areas potentially affected by the typhoon and earthquake, should follow the advice of local authorities, exercise caution and monitor local media for any developments
