The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has announced the appointment of Louise Unger as the executive director for response and enforcement.
Unger (pictured) will take up her position on the executive leadership team at the FMA.
Previously, Unger held the position of general manager at the credit branch of the Commerce Commission, where she led the enforcement and regulatory framework of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act. Her career also includes significant roles in risk and compliance at Lawyers on Demand NZ, a global law firm.
Unger has accumulated extensive experience in the sector, notably a 12-year leadership role in legal and risk management at the Bank of New Zealand.
Commenting on the appointment, Samantha Barrass, chief executive of the FMA, highlighted the extensive and international scope of the search to fill this vital role.
“I am delighted we have secured Louise's talent and skills for the FMA at this critical point in our oversight of financial services conduct in New Zealand. Louise has proven experience as a leader in governance and financial services law,” she said.
Unger, who possesses degrees in law and commerce from Canterbury University, is expected to begin her tenure with the FMA in Auckland this June.
The appointment follows the launch of a new standard condition targeting market license holders, aimed at enhancing the sectors of business continuity and technological infrastructure in the New Zealand financial industry.
