There are two more weeks before further information will be provided to landslip-affected St Clair homeowners – including information on how much longer they will remain out of their homes.

Six Dunedin homes were evacuated after the city council issued dangerous building notices in December, after a large slip and cracking was discovered under one of the houses. All six property owners lodged claims with the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

Last week, the EQC team and engineers from Tonkin & Taylor met with residents and representatives from the city council to discuss the latest geotechnical testing on land in the area. Some of the information provided related to the land claims assessment process and the preliminary results of the monitoring, which confirmed there has been minor land movement since monitoring began in late December.

Further monitoring will be carried out over the next fortnight to provide more information on the cause of the slip, EQC head of response and recovery Robyn Nation said.

“The information that we have gathered to date, and the monitoring carried out over the next two weeks, will help us understand the scale of the damage and confirm the cause of the slip,” Nation noted. “In turn, this will give us a better idea of what remedial solutions are available.”

EQC said it will contact all homeowners again in two weeks once the survey report is finalised and to update them on the next steps.

“This will enable homeowners to be kept informed of how their claims are progressing while the council will make its decisions in regard to when the houses can be safely occupied,” Nation added.
