Munich Re has announced Klaus Wilkens (pictured) as the new president and CEO for Munich Reinsurance Company of Canada and Temple Insurance Company, the reinsurer’s agency affiliate in the country.

Wilkens, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry, first joined Munich Re in 1995, embarking on a career that began in the casualty facultative underwriting department.

Wilkens’ career trajectory at Munich Re took him across the globe, including a significant tenure with Munich Re of Africa starting in 2000, before he returned to Munich to serve as senior underwriter, specializing in customized reinsurance solutions.

In 2008, he advanced to the position of client management executive, overseeing the client management team responsible for the non-life reinsurance business in several key markets, including the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries.

In his new role, Wilkens will oversee the operations of Munich Reinsurance Company’s non-life business in Canada.

With the Canadian reinsurance and insurance market facing numerous challenges, Munich Re noted that Wilkens is poised to lead the company’s efforts in identifying and capitalizing on new business opportunities.

Munich Re touted Wilkens’ strong leadership capabilities and market-facing strengths, including people leadership skills, and technical underwriting expertise. His tenure at Munich Re has also been marked by sustainable relationships with clients and brokers, it said.

Wilkens’ promotion follows another high-profile appointment for the reinsurer. In early March, the firm’s health arm – Munich Re HealthTech (MRHT) – named Bilal Ramadan as its chief executive officer.

Elsewhere in the company, Munich Re EVP and marine underwriting North America head Sean Dalton was recently elected as the new chairman for the National Cargo Bureau’s (NCB) board of directors.
