SGI Canada has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan to help those who have been affected by recent disasters in the province.
“SGI Canada is proud to support our communities and the Red Cross, and help in times of need,” SGI minister Joe Hargrave said in a statement.
The insurer presented the Canadian Red Cross a $35,000 cheque to be used towards the partnership. $25,000 of that amount will be used to buy flood clean-up kits, provide assistance to families with long-term recovery needs, and support ongoing Red Cross emergency preparedness and awareness efforts.
“The Red Cross really focuses on the first 72-hours of a natural disaster and having a flood clean-up kit is very vital and in cases where there are floods, it allows people to proceed immediately with the clean-up,” explained Canadian Red Cross outreach coordinator for disaster management Jan Radwanski.
Radwanski added that the funding will be used to purchase 200 kits and “family assistance” items – clothing and food assistance that the Red Cross provides to families that are unable to return to their homes. The funding will also be used to secure accommodation for those households without homes.
Globalnews.ca reported that an additional $10,000 will be provided for equipment and necessities.
In addition to the funding, SGI is providing the non-profit with access to a list of SGI volunteers to help with disaster efforts under the Red Cross’ “Ready When the Time Comes” program.
