Medavie Blue Cross has introduced a new program aimed at assisting families with the costs linked to fertility treatments, surrogacy, and adoption.
The family building benefit comes as a response to the challenges and expenses faced by those looking to start or expand their families. It cited data indicating that the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) averages between $10,000 and $15,000 per cycle, while surrogacy can cost up to $80,000.
Other options have similarly high costs, with private adoption fees typically starting at $15,000 per child, according to Medavie Blue Cross.
Additional research indicates that half of Canadians contemplate taking on a second job to offset fertility treatment costs. Within this group, 37% have considered selling their possessions, while 36% have accumulated credit card debt.
Shane Reid, director of drug and product management, spoke of the new offering and said its goal is to “help people access the type of care that best supports their needs.”
“The suite of options available within our Family Building Benefit is designed to help individuals and couples access comprehensive and tailored support for their family-building goals,” he said further.
The new Family Building Benefit from Medavie Blue Cross is optional coverage complementing government-funded programs. At a reasonable cost to employers, it enables employees to access financial support for fertility treatments, including IVF, adoption fees, and related expenses.
“Finding ways to support individuals and couples on their journeys to parenthood not only nurtures hope but also provides the opportunity to support choices and enhance overall wellbeing,” said Reid. “Our focus is creating inclusive, family-friendly benefits that make a real difference.”
Last year, Medavie Blue Cross revamped its employee and family assistance program by creating a “digital-first” experience powered by Inkblot Therapy.
