The Government of Canada is celebrating significant progress in enhancing the accessibility and affordability of oral healthcare. This week, two million Canadian seniors will have been approved for coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), while over 90,000 seniors have already received care through nearly 10,000 participating providers.
“Today marks new milestones in oral healthcare with two million seniors approved to receive quality dental coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan and close to 10,000 participating oral healthcare providers,” Health Minister Mark Holland said on Wednesday.
“For decades, many Canadians could not receive the care they need and deserve, as they struggled with the cost-of-living. As the number of participating oral health providers grows, more Canadians will benefit from improved oral and overall health.”
Meanwhile, for those without an existing oral health provider, Sun Life’s CDCP Provider Search tool can help locate a nearby provider. Also, from July 8, providers can directly bill Sun Life on a claim-by-claim basis without enrolling in the CDCP, allowing clients to choose any provider willing to direct bill Sun Life.
Seniors aged 65 and older, without dental insurance and with an adjusted family net income below $90,000, are eligible to apply for the CDCP. Starting in June, eligibility will extend to adults with a valid disability tax credit and children under 18.
“I would like to thank Canadians for embracing the phased approach to roll out the largest public benefit in our history,” Minister of Citizens’ Services Terry Beech stated. “In approximately one month, children and eligible persons with disabilities can also apply online for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
“Tens of thousands of Canadians have already received necessary oral healthcare under this plan. With kids and persons with disabilities enrolling next month, we are making sure everyone gets the care they need.”
Depending on their household income, CDCP clients may have to pay a co-payment and additional charges based on the services received. It is essential for clients to verify the amount not covered by the CDCP before receiving any services, as direct reimbursement from Sun Life is not an option.
Commenting on the progress of the CDCP, Sun Life Health president Dave Jones declared: “It’s great to see that thousands of Canadians have started to receive the oral healthcare they need. Knowing that Canadians are accessing care and helping their smiles shine is heartwarming.
“Together, with the Government of Canada, we’re committed to ensuring the Canadian Dental Care Plan continues to succeed.”
