An airfield in a south-central Ontario town is in need of the very epitome of specialist product, as the expansion of the local airfield’s runway hits a snag.
Tottenham Airfield Corporation, which bought the airfield in 2012, is in the process of upgrading the airfield near New Tecumseth in Simcoe County for general and recreational uses, by way of bringing the runways up to the grade of the adjacent properties and highway. Work also includes the addition of taxiways and replacing existing hangars.
Once the upgrade is complete Tottenham Airfield is anticipated to be able to take some of the smaller air traffic once nearby Buttonville Airport closes.
Tottenham Airfield Corporation has a few more weeks in which to negotiate amendments to a proposed million-dollar security deposit and explore options in securing two separate lines of insurance -- General, and Pollution -- of at least $5 million each.
Town solicitor Jay Feehely told councillors that TAC will be required to carry the coverage and name the Town as co-insured. Feehely said the pollution insurance, would cover the costs if contaminants escape the site.
The delay also provides residents with the opportunity to offer input to the site plan and best management practices program.
Council is scheduled to tackle public input and the results of negotiations at a council meeting in late April.
