The annual Wildfire Community Preparedness Day program is now accepting applications from Canadians interested in joining the national effort to reduce the risk of wildfires.
The national program was launched by non-profit FireSmart Canada, in collaboration with insurance company The Co-operators, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.
Applicants can utilize funding from May 05, 2019 through October to host their own Wildfire Community Preparedness Day events; these events raise awareness of wildfire risk and encourage communities to improve their resiliency to fire through simple steps such as clearing dry vegetation and using fire-resistant roofing materials.
According to a release, a total of $47,000 was awarded to 94 applicants last year.
“The Wildfire Community Preparedness Day campaign is a very exciting time of year for FireSmart Canada,” said FireSmart Canada president Laura Stewart. “We are eager to see applications come in from communities who are taking action to reduce the risk of wildfire affecting their community.”
“As wildfire seasons become longer and more severe, it is important that Canadians are aware of the risk and actions they can take to help mitigate that risk,” added The Co-operators government relations director Maya Milardovic. “Through this funding, we are helping communities to come together across the country to take proactive steps to make their communities safer and more resilient.”
