Two tornadoes which hit southern Alberta in July have been declared catastrophes by Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. (CatIQ), the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has announced.
The storms – one that developed in the Bergen area on July 07 and another in Redcliff on July 18 – have been given a preliminary rating of EF-2 by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Under the catastrophe classification, each incident is expected to exceed $30 million in insured losses.
In the July 07 storm, at least four houses and multiple trees were damaged due to the tornado. The storm also saw several other communities see considerable hail fall – the hail as large as a chicken egg, in some cases.
Meanwhile, multiple grain bins, homes, and an RV were damaged by the July 18 storm, CTV News reported.
Officials said that detailed estimates on losses stemming from the storms will be released later this year.
