Prince Edward Island’s government is launching a provincial disaster assistance program to aid residents affected by disaster such as the post-tropical storm Dorian.
The program – the first of its kind in PEI – is designed to help residents with uninsurable basic property loss from natural calamities. Aside from homeowners, small businesses, municipal governments and not-for-profit organizations are also eligible to apply for the disaster assistance.
In order to expedite the process, the Canadian Red Cross is now accepting registrations from PEI locals who wish to claim from the disaster fund, CBC News said.
The Canadian Press reported that together with the launch of the financial assistance program, a one-time emergency fund will also be provided to about 6,000 PEI locals that are currently on income assistance. The money will be sent to individuals either through direct deposit or cheque by the end of the week.
Those receiving the income assistance will each get $110; couples get $140 and an additional $30 for each dependent.
