Three weeks following the evacuation due to severe wildfires, local authorities in the western Canadian tourist town of Jasper have given the green light for residents to return starting this Friday.
The decision marks the partial restoration of essential services, including police and ambulance support, though the town is still not equipped to handle tourists or residents whose homes have been severely damaged.
Christine Nadon, a municipal official, cautioned returning residents about the uncertainty they might face.
"Whether your home is intact or not, you may not be able to remain there," Nadon said during a press update, highlighting the continuing challenges in securing stable accommodations.
The wildfires, which commenced on July 22, 2024, led to the evacuation of around 25,000 individuals, encompassing tourists and the local population of Jasper. Situated in the expansive Jasper National Park, the town is a hotspot for over two million visitors each year.
Currently, the community and its businesses are grappling with significant disruptions. Recreational facilities such as trails, campgrounds, and day-use areas remain closed. Authorities have pointed to ongoing risks related to poor air quality and unstable terrains filled with hazardous waste and trees as reasons for these closures.
To date, thorough assessments have not been performed on private properties. Nadon noted that even structures that appear externally sound may harbour extensive internal damages. The wildfires ravaged nearly a third of Jasper’s structures, with some flames reaching up to 100 meters in height.
For Jasper’s business community, recovery is a multifaceted endeavor involving rebuilding infrastructure, navigating environmental hazards, and managing delayed tourist activities. The immediate priority for local enterprises is supporting community infrastructure needs and ensuring comprehensive safety measures are in place before resuming regular operations.
The current scenario underscores a critical challenge for risk management within the business sector. Businesses have been encouraged to maintain open communication with stakeholders about the status of operations and recovery initiatives.
