The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has issued an advisory for Ontario, cautioning homeowners to take steps to mitigate the risk of weather-induced damage.
The bureau cited the special weather statements and alerts made by Environment Canada, which forecasted strong winds and heavy rainfall across Ontario. According to IBC, severe rain and melting snow during the period could lead to flooding in the province, while powerful gusts can damage property and vehicles.
"Following the extreme cold conditions seen across Ontario last week, this warm-weather system has the potential to lead to significant snowmelt, ice jams and flooding," said IBC Ontario vice president Kim Donaldson in a statement. "With heavy winds and rainfall added to the mix, this storm could result in extensive damage. We encourage residents to take a few simple steps now to help protect their property from damage."
IBC has provided a list of tips for homeowners to follow in order to reduce the risk of damage.
IBC also prepared a list of reminders for homeowners who may have questions about their insurance policies, and what they cover in the event of a storm.
Those with further questions have been advised to contact their insurance representative. IBC is also open to questions on general insurance information, through its Consumer Information Centre or its website.
IBC’s advisory comes after the bureau praised the Ontario government’s recent launch of its first-ever Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan. The plan serves as a blueprint for emergency management in the province for events such as natural calamities.
