The Canadian government has announced funding to support Albertans affected by the 2024 wildfires as they recover and rebuild.
Harjit Sajjan, minister of emergency preparedness, attended the Canadian Red Cross’ annual Ready Conference to confirm $12.6 million in matching funds from the federal government to the Canadian Red Cross’ 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal. This contribution brings the total support for wildfire-affected residents in Jasper to $40.4 million.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Albertans and Jasper residents and will be there for them every step of the way,” Sajjan said. “This announcement means additional support to help those affected. It is more than financial aid – it’s about ensuring families, communities and businesses have the resources and the support they need as they recover and rebuild stronger and more resilient.”
On July 28, 2024, the federal and Alberta governments launched a donation-matching initiative with the Canadian Red Cross to support wildfire relief and recovery in Alberta, including Jasper.
For 30 days, both governments matched all donations to the appeal, retroactive to its opening on July 25, 2024. Every $1 donated resulted in $3 in assistance for affected individuals and families.
The Canadian Red Cross’ 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal has supported numerous drives and sectors, including emergency relief, recovery assistance, small businesses and not-for-profits, community groups addressing increased service demands, social needs and long-term recovery efforts, and disaster risk reduction efforts.
The federal government has committed to ongoing support for those affected by the 2024 wildfires, including assistance for individuals, businesses, and communities.
“The Canadian Red Cross welcomes today’s announcement and is grateful to the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta for matching funds to the 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal,” said Conrad Sauve, president and COE of the Canadian Red Cross. “We will continue to work with our government and community partners as we look ahead to building resilience in the community.”
