To better help homeowners impacted by the derecho storm that struck on May 21, 2022, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is implementing “temporary measures” to help insurers operating in the province to more efficiently process claims related to the weather event.
FSRA will temporarily allow Ontario insurers to use the services of employees of affiliated insurers, and to allow licensed adjusting companies to use claims adjusters with licenses outside of Ontario – for purposes of adjusting claims of Ontario customers related to the May 21 storm.
These measures will be in effect until September 30, 2022, the FSRA said in a release. Insurers and adjusting companies that wish to utilize these measures are encouraged to contact the FSRA to confirm the requirements of the measures.
Citing data from Environment Canada, FSRA said that the storm developed next to Sarnia the morning of May 21, managing to reach Ottawa that afternoon. Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project Team had confirmed that an EF2 tornado developed at Uxbridge, while another EF2 downburst hit Southern Ottawa with wind speeds reaching 190 km/h.
At the height of the storm, nearly a million households in both Ontario and Quebec were without power. The derecho also led to the deaths of at least 10 people.
