Residents of New Brunswick were hit by harsh weather conditions over the weekend, resulting in flooding and road closures.
Rain and unusually warm temperatures exacerbated flood conditions in some areas of the region. Other communities experienced power outages related to the weather event. According to reports, rainfall amounts totaling 125 millimeters fell over parts of New Brunswick.
Greg McCallum, director of the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (EMO), told CBC News that the organization is moving into the recovery phase of its operation.
“There’s a considerable amount of repair work to be done, both in terms of infrastructure and the road network and in many cases individual homes,” he said.
New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization spokesperson Robert Duguay added that it was fortunate that the prolonged freezing rain previously forecasted by Environment Canada did not occur.
“With that change, that makes the situation less dramatic. We were very concerned that we could have even more power outages,” Duguay remarked.
CBC News reported that, as of Sunday, there were still 2,453 NB Power customers that are still without power; most of the outages were in Kent County.
McCallum said EMO would be releasing its damage report soon, but noted that residents should contact their insurers as well since it has yet to be confirmed whether the government would be providing assistance.
