Canada’s most earthquake-prone province gets early warning system

British Columbia, the most seismically active province in Canada, now has its EEW (earthquake early warning) system in place, with further rollout slated for later this year in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec.

The EEW system offers individuals crucial seconds to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” before shaking intensifies by issuing alerts upon the detection of earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5 and an intensity level higher than IV. Natural Resources Canada will also ensure that operators of critical infrastructure receive direct, authenticated earthquake alerts.

The operators can then initiate automated safety measures for trains, bridges, and tunnels. For instance, they might stop traffic on bridges and in tunnels, halt trains to prevent derailments, delay aircraft landings, or open firehouse doors to facilitate faster emergency response in the quake's aftermath.

Timely warnings can be the difference between life and death in the face of earthquakes,” Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Sajjan stated. “This early warning system is a critical investment in Canada’s emergency preparedness and response, empowering individuals and communities to take action and reduce the devastating impact of seismic events.

“By providing crucial seconds to seek safety, we can save lives, reduce injuries, and minimize damage to infrastructure and the environment. This system is a vital tool for emergency responders, healthcare providers, and all Canadians, helping us build a more resilient nation from coast to coast to coast.”

Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma added: “British Columbia is more prone to earthquakes than anywhere else in Canada, and it’s important that we use the most advanced methods available to protect people across the province.”

For Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, the “valuable seconds of warning” advance the government’s priority of ensuring Canadians’ health and safety.

Each year, there are approximately 5,000 earthquakes detected across Canada.
