Insurance heavyweight AXA has received recognition for its corporate commitment to gender equality as women now make up the majority of its global workforce.

The insurer has been awarded with the Economic Dividends for Gender Equality (EDGE) certification, which acknowledges the firm’s global commitments and actions in achieving and sustaining gender diversity and equality in the workplace.

According to the company, women formed over 53% of its 166,000-strong workforce across 64 countries in 2015. Females also held 42% of all management positions globally.

The insurance firm said chief executive Thomas Buberl and the management team are fully committed to increasing the percentage of women in senior leadership roles from 9% in 2009 to 25% this year and 33% by the end of 2020.

“We are very pleased to be awarded the EDGE Certification which recognizes our efforts in terms of gender equality,” said AXA board chairman Denis Duverne.

“We want to become the employer of choice for women in the insurance and asset management sectors and the EDGE certificate is a major milestone to reach that objective,” he added.

Duverne said the EDGE certification will encourage the company “to go ever further towards gender equality.”
