The Ontario chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society has awarded Valerie Fox (pictured) with the prestigious 2024 Donald M. Stuart Award.
The honour, regarded as the highest recognition in Canadian risk management, has been presented since 1979 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the profession.
Fox, now retired, served as director of risk management and health & safety for NPL Canada and has over four decades of experience. Throughout her career, she held senior risk management roles across the likes of Loblaw Companies, Walmart International, Wendy’s Restaurants of Canada, and the Municipality of Etobicoke.
In these positions, she developed and implemented comprehensive risk programs that encompassed everything from claims management and workers’ compensation to business continuity planning and alternative risk financing.
Even in retirement, Fox remains active within the industry, dedicating time to advancing the field. She has been a member of the ORIMS (RIMS Ontario) board for a decade and has taken on multiple leadership roles within the RIMS Canada Council.
Reflecting on the evolution of the profession, Fox remarked: “Since I began my career, risks have intensified and become more complex, risk management has evolved, and the overall profession has undergone this amazing transformation. While a lot has changed, the importance of relationships, professional development, and volunteerism have remained the same.
“It has been a privilege to be a part of RIMS, to share my experiences, and watch my risk-practicing colleagues succeed. I’m incredibly honoured to be recognized with the prestigious Donald M. Stuart Award.”
Fox holds both the Canadian Risk Management designation and the RIMS-CRMP certification, which she credits for helping her drive strategic decisions and foster innovation. Beyond her professional achievements, she remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of risk professionals, frequently conducting workshops and participating in educational events for students and emerging risk managers.
ORIMS president Gloria Dang expressed admiration for Fox’s contributions, stating: “Above and beyond being an exceptional risk professional, Valerie has made it her priority to give back to the profession so that the next generation of risk leaders have the support and resources to achieve their goals...
“She is an unrivalled ambassador of Canada’s risk management community and is incredibly deserving of this lifetime achievement award.”
