Transport Canada has launched a probe into nearly 250,000 General Motors (GM) full-size pick-up trucks and SUVs related to braking performance issues.
The regulator’s probe comes after US officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an inquiry of their own last year on GM vehicles in America, Transport Canada explained in a statement on its website.
According to Reuters, the probe covers 249,700 vehicles, from model years 2015 through 2017. Models include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Transport Canada is also looking into the braking performance of 2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD vehicles.
The NHTSA probe came after reports of nine incidents wherein the suspected vehicles incurred damage as a result of colliding with another vehicle or fixed object at low speeds, as well as two reports of injuries resulting from the collisions. The NHTSA found that if the pump fails to operate, it could significantly reduce the amount of braking power assistance. Therefore, the affected vehicle’s stopping distance is increased, which could lead to an increased risk of collisions.
The US regulator sent GM an information request earlier this year, but there has yet to be any updates on the American investigation, Reuters reported.
