The Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) has announced its new board of governors, electing Valérie Lavoie as chair.  

Lavoie currently serves as the president and COO of Desjardins General Insurance Group in Levis, Quebec.  

In her new role with the IIC, Lavoie will guide the institute’s programs to help Canadian property & casualty insurance professionals achieve their career aspirations.

The IIC has a membership of over 41,000, including more than 18,000 active students in formal programs. It also serves as the parent organization of the Chartered Insurance Professionals’ Society, supporting over 18,000 graduate Chartered Insurance Professionals (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professionals (FCIP). 

“The Insurance Institute of Canada offers crucial skills and knowledge to P&C insurance professionals through relevant life-long learning opportunities, in a variety of flexible learning formats,” Lavoie said in an emailed news release. “It is an honour to assume the role of chair.” 

Joining Lavoie on the 2023-2024 Executive Committee of the Board of Governors are other distinguished industry leaders: 

  • Deputy Chair: James Russell, BMath, FCIA, president and CEO of TD Insurance
  • Vice Chair, Membership-at-Large: Stéphane Lespérance, CRM, president of Aon Canada 

The immediate past chairs include Jason Storah, CEO of Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance (formerly CEO of Aviva Canada), and Heather Masterson, president and CEO of Travelers Canada. 

Additionally, the board comprises regional vice chairs representing different provinces: 

  • Western Provinces: Kerry McLaughlin, CIP, CRM, ACS
  • Ontario: Andrew Steen, CIP
  • Quebec: Alex Stringer, FPAA, CRM
  • Atlantic Provinces: Tricia Hashie, FCIP

The divisional vice chairs include Paul Croft, CIP, CRM, CCIB, representing the academic sector, and Rosalind Staples-Simpson, FCIP, representing the professionals sector. 

“We are fortunate to be able to gain new directional insights from our board leaders, who come from key positions across Canada’s P&C landscape and bring so much to our members,” said Peter Hohman, MBA, FCIP, ICD.D, president and CEO of the Insurance Institute of Canada. 

“Together with the board, the Institute continues to evolve its leading status to meet the needs of the insurance industry by delivering the most relevant curriculum in Canada’s P&C insurance sector.”
