An executive with The Co-operators has been handed a prestigious leadership award by the Global CIO Executive Summit.

Carol Poulsen, executive vice-president and chief information officer (CIO) of The Co-operators, has been named one of the winners of the 10th annual Global Breakaway Leadership Award.

The award recognizes five CIOs who are “revolutionizing their organizations' competitive position in the marketplace through visionary leadership and business transformation,” a release said.

"Carol is a business leader who has exemplified our purpose to provide financial security for Canadians and Canadian communities while building an industry-leading technology capability at The Co-operators," commented The Co-operators president and CEO Rob Wesseling.

Wesseling added that Poulsen’s contributions go beyond her duties as CIO. He described her as a “champion of diversity and sustainability” within the company, who has built a highly engaged and high-performance team while maturing the company’s development processes, security infrastructure, and innovation.

Poulsen joined The Co-operators as CIO in 2011. She has previous experience in insurance and banking, technology and business. She also has vendor experience, particularly IT delivery, consulting, large account management and sales.
