Motorcycle drivers in Saskatchewan will have a new option for coverage starting in 2016.
SGI announced that it will offer a new option for riders to obtain a slightly scaled back package that will reduce costs by 20 to 30 percent.
“Motorcyclists have asked for more choices in injury coverage, and government and SGI have listened,” SGI Minister Don McMorris said in a statement. “The new option is for motorcycle owners who feel they require fewer benefits in the event of a collision, and because there are fewer benefits, it’s a lower cost. It also ensures that all motorcyclists continue to receive some level of insurance coverage if they’re injured.”
As a result, motorcycle enthusiasts will have their choice of three options:
- Comprehensive coverage with generous no fault benefits
- Tort coverage with limited benefits but the option to sue
- A condensed package similar to the tort provision but without the ability to pursue litigation
Rates will include such factors as make and model of the motorcycle, as well as drivers’ claims history.
SGI decided to amend its insurance offerings after receiving feedback from a motorcycle review in 2013, and other provisions are also under consideration.
The province hopes drivers will be judicious when choosing which options are best suited for their individual needs.
“The decision to opt for a reduced package of benefits is one motorcyclists should not take lightly,” McMorris said. “Motorcycles are smaller and more vulnerable than other vehicles on the road, and a collision or fall can result in serious injuries. If you own a motorcycle, I urge you to give this very serious consideration to ensure you have the right coverage to meet your individual needs, as well as those of your family, in the event of an injury.”
