More working Canadians are looking into switching jobs, and insurers will have to do something about it unless they want to lose talent, a new survey by Allstate Insurance Company of Canada has found.
The survey, conducted by Leger and commissioned by Allstate Canada, found that 55% of working respondents in Canada indicated that they had thought about looking for a new job in the last six months. Of those who said they are looking for a new job, 27% said they had thought about it a couple of times per week.
Among those considering a new job, 49% said that work-life balance is one of the most important qualities they are looking for, while another 22% said the capability to work from home was key.
Allstate Canada revealed that it has been addressing the issue of potential talent loss in its own way.
“What the survey results show is that attracting and retaining qualified and talented employees is one of the biggest challenges organizations face nowadays. People's outlook on life has shifted due to COVID-19, and employers must adapt to this new reality,” said Allstate Canada president and CEO Ryan Michel.
One of the key factors Allstate Canada has used to retain talent is offering flexibility when it comes to working arrangements, Michel explained.
“At Allstate, the majority of our staff were able to work remotely even before the pandemic. Providing flexibility in the workplace is key to helping ensure employees have access to the tools they need for mental and physical wellness,” the chief executive said.
The Leger survey also found that some of the most important qualities working Canadians are looking for at a potential employer include “honest, open communications with employees” (54%) and “employee performance recognition” (37%).
“At Allstate Canada, we believe our employees are our greatest strength, so we strive to create an environment for people to flourish,” commented Michel. “Our environment is focused on wellness, collaboration, contribution and growth. This applies to employees at all levels, from long-standing management positions to our entry-level roles.”
