A pair of storms that hit Saskatchewan earlier this month resulted in almost 1,000 claims alone, Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has reported.
July 09 and 10 saw back-to-back storm systems that pelted the southern portions of the province with hail. According to SGI, it recorded 716 auto claims and 228 property claims related to the storms – of those figures, 649 auto claims and 139 property claims were for hail.
SGI manager of media relations Tyler McMurchy was not surprised at the number of claims filed following the calamities.
“This was definitely a significant storm event and we know many people were affected by it, but it’s kind of a fact of life when you’re living in Saskatchewan,” he told Swift Current Online.
“Hail does effect cars to a significant degree [compared to houses],” noted McMurchy, who explained why there were more auto claims than property claims. “When you’re looking at a large amount of hail, the damage can be more severe to the auto body.”
Hail was not the only problem facing Saskatchewan residents; the combined number of auto-property claims related to wind numbered 122, while flooding/sewer back-up/lightning claims totalled 34.
