Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has submitted its general rate application to the Public Utilities Board (PUB), calling for a “modest” 2.2% increase (on average) in auto insurance rates next year.

The proposed increase could affect about 547,166 vehicles, excluding trailers and off-road vehicles, CBC News reported. The average passenger vehicle owner could see their premiums bumped up by $27 if MPI’s request is greenlighted.

“We fully recognize that our customers expect us to deliver comprehensive auto insurance coverage and service at rates that are affordable, predictable and stable over time. We believe this rate application continues to deliver on that mandate,” MPI president Ben Graham stated in a release.

Individual rates may vary based on the type of vehicle, usage frequency, territory rating, and driving history.

Not all vehicle types will experience an increase – trailers and off-road vehicles might see a reduction in their premiums, based on MPI’s recommendations.

The proposed rates per vehicle type are:

  • Private passenger - 2.4% increase
  • Commercial - 2.4% increase
  • Public - 0.6% increase
  • Motorcycles - 3.1% increase
  • Trailers - 4.7% decrease
  • Off-road vehicles - 20% decrease
  • Overall - 2.2% increase

MPI said that about 40% of drivers can expect an increase of less than $50 annually.

Last year, the insurer requested an average rate increase of 3.7%.
