The insurer warned that over a million vehicles were damaged in Texas and Florida this summer, which means there could be a lot of water-damaged vehicles on the market.

Flooded-in vehicles cannot be registered in Manitoba, MPI cautioned, nor can they be brought across the border.
MPI vice-president Ward Keith said that it is always important for consumers to do their research before making a used vehicle purchase.

The insurer has suggested that buyers look up whether a used car has a history of flood damage on CarProof or Carfax. Buyers should also inspect the vehicle for signs of water damage, such as damp or musty odors, rust or mud in the trunk, glove box or beneath the seats, and a water line under the hood.
MPI also suggested having the vehicle inspected by a certified automotive technician.
