Customers with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) have been advised to check their bank accounts, as a recent glitch with the insurer’s systems charged some consumers twice for their Autopac insurance.
Brian Smiley, MPI spokesperson, said that the Crown corporation recently experienced a “system error.” The error caused some customers’ payments – particularly those utilizing online banking to pay for premiums – to be withdrawn a day early.
Smiley would not confirm with CBC News the nature of the system error but did offer assurances that the problem was fixed within 24 hours. The spokesperson could also not say how many customers were affected by the issue but underlined that not all of MPI’s customers were billed twice.
The spokesperson has urged customers who have been charged twice to contact their brokers.
“We sent out immediate notification to the brokers to let them know that there had been a system issue and that our IT team was dealing with it immediately,” he added.
Smiley explained that in cases where MPI incorrectly withdraws a payment, the company typically applies the money back to the customer’s remaining financing.
