Specialty insurance stalwart Toby Smith (pictured above) will join Mosaic Insurance as CEO of the Americas, effective July 23.

Based in New York, Smith will join Mosaic’s leadership team with responsibility for market engagement and growth across the US, Canada, and the wider Americas region.

Smith brings over 20 years of experience in the specialty insurance industry. He most recently served as chief underwriting officer, North America specialty lines, for Liberty Mutual.

He previously worked with Mosaic’s leadership at Ironshore Inc from 2009, where he launched its environmental business and held roles including president of environmental and president of E&S casualty.

He began his career at AIG, managing a team in its environmental claims and coverage unit before moving to underwriting. Smith holds a bachelor of arts from Colgate University and a JD from Washington & Lee School of Law.

At Mosaic, Smith will direct new product development and oversee Americas-focused lines of business, including the company’s three largest divisions—transactional liability, cyber, and environmental liability.

“Toby is a longtime colleague with an exceptional track record that has seen him build the largest environmental business in the market,” Mosaic co-CEO Mitch Blaser said. “He will be instrumental in continuing our growth trajectory and accelerating our strategic ambitions across specialty product lines globally and in the critical US region. As he joins our impressive team, we look forward to creating significant value for our stakeholders, partners, and customers.”

Mark Wheeler, co-CEO of Mosaic, also emphasized the importance of Smith's role.

“Our unique underwriting agency structure and syndicated products are delivering an impact across global markets, and the appointment of a high-caliber leader like Toby demonstrates our commitment to driving further profitable expansion through the Americas. As we gather momentum, he is the right person at the right time to scale up our business and help us seize the great opportunities ahead, and we look forward to working with him again,” Wheeler said.

“I’m thrilled to join Mosaic at this stage of its tremendous growth, and I look forward to working with its dynamic team—including Mitch, Mark, and other former colleagues—to deliver expansion, innovation, and success,” Smith said. “Mosaic is a young company that in a short time span has won recognition and market respect for its differentiated model, leading underwriters, and highly specialized business lines. The opportunity to join that journey and help shape its roadmap for the future is energizing.”

Earlier this year, Mosaic signaled its growing appetite for American business by moving its New York City office to One Grand Central Place, 60 East 42nd Street. The company, launched in February 2021, now has close to 180 employees across seven countries, with three offices – New York, Chicago, and Toronto – in North America.
