The
Insurance Business Awards 2017 will take place on November 30 at the Liberty Grand Hotel in Toronto’s Exhibition district and Karen Barkley, Markel Canada’s president, is certainly hoping to make it along.
“It will be a new event for me as I could not attend last year’s,” Barkley said. “Many events in our industry happen on a regular basis and become very much the same thing year after year. So it is nice to see something switched up a bit.”
Markel’s team in attendance at the inaugural IB Awards last year have advised Barkley that there was real value in the organization’s presence. In the grand scheme of things the insurance community in Canada is fairly small, Barkley pointed out, and bringing together the different aspects of business which ultimately answer to the same regulator, in a social setting, is never a bad thing.

“It is all insurance,” she said. “Some carriers do both (L&H and P&C); the brokers have crossover between life and P&C; we balance the time spent between personal lines and commercial insurance: there’s certainly no harm in combining products in a social setting.
“It is such a small industry in Canada in the P&C market, that someone who was your underwriter one day is your broker the next and vice versa.”
Being a platinum sponsor of the IB Awards for the second year in a row is part of Markel’s community approach of supporting individuals and organization’s charities along with industry events.
This year’s IB Awards’ nominations are open until September 20, at which time research is conducted to ensure no deserving parties miss out.
Finalists are then asked to complete submission documents which are passed along to a panel of independent judges from the insurance industry.
