Roger Herrin, a retired foot surgeon, was left reeling over a court ruling mandating that he repay $500,000 of insurance money he received after the loss of his son in a car accident.
The southern Illinois man decided to convey this exasperation through unconventional means: by repaying $150,000 of that sum in what he describes as a “heavy as hell” amount of quarters – 7,500 pounds worth, to be exact.
“I just wanted to draw attention to what went on here,” Herrin told the Associated Press. “I really wanted to do it in pennies.”
Herrin’s son was hit by a truck driver who failed to yield to a stop sign back in 2001. Herrin initially received an $800,000 settlement from the car’s insurance, and $1.6 million in other compensation.
The three survivors of the accident appealed, however, and Herrin was ordered to repay a significant portion of the $800,000 so more money could be distributed to the other passengers’ families.
Herrin decided to do so “obviously in protest,” which is why he sent nearly four tons of quarters, to the attorneys representing the survivors.
“I've had 10 years to think about this a little bit, and I'm very, very bitter at this ruling," he said. "It's wrong, and everybody knows it's wrong."
