A licenced insurance agent is facing 14 criminal charges after being caught using stolen identities to open fraudulent policies.
Carl Eudell, an independent agent, is believed to have stolen identities from people – including some of his friends – in order to collect commissions on the policies.
Investigators in Orlando, where the man is said to have worked for American Senior Benefits, said that Eudell is believed to have conned at least seven people, according to WFTV news.
Four of the victims were over 60 years old, Capt. Evangelina Brooke, of the Bureau of Insurance Fraud said.
While Eudell is thought to have come up with the scheme in order to net the commission proceeds, he only made US$1,300, investigators said – and is now facing a host of felony charges.
Floretta Smith, 71, said that Eudell used her social security number and other personal information to apply for life insurance in her name, and she is now worried about her credit score.
Other victims included strangers that Eudell had never met, and even a person that he had met through church, according to the report.
Investigators with the Bureau of Insurance Fraud said that they do not believe Eudell acted alone in his scam, and are working to find out who may have assisted him.
American Senior Benefits said Eudell had resigned, and the company has been cooperating with the investigation.
Smith added, “It’s not right, it’s not right for him to do that to us.”
