GreenShield has published its first Health Outcomes Report, highlighting a 132% surge in mental health claims and a 14% uptick in chronic disease-related drug claims among Canadian workers since the coronavirus pandemic.

Key findings of the inaugural GreenShield resource include:

  • Digital health solutions are widely adopted: In 2023, 97% of EAP (employee assistance program) counselling appointments were accessed virtually.
  • Younger employees are leading the charge: Those aged 25-34 represent 35% of virtual mental health service users and 42% of telemedicine users.
  • Women dominate the use of digital workplace health services: This demographic accounts for over 75% of mental health service use and 54% of telemedicine users.

The report underscored the critical role of digital health solutions in addressing current employee health needs. It provided insights from GreenShield Insurance, GreenShield Health, and GreenShield Administration, which collectively serve seven million people in Canada.

“We’re seeing a strong interest in accessible workplace health solutions and holistic support, highest among women and younger employees,” commented Harriet Ekperigin, vice president for mental health at GreenShield Health.

“Our priority is to ensure these health services aren’t just convenient to access but effective in improving health outcomes. Having a healthier workforce will improve engagement, reduce absenteeism, and mitigate chronic diseases and their associated costs, helping both employers and employees unlock their full potential.”

GreenShield said its initiatives are significantly enhancing access to care and improving health outcomes. GreenShield Health’s counselling service, for instance, cuts the average wait time to see a mental health professional by 87%, from 31 days to four days.

Also, GreenShield Health’s telemedicine service reduces the average wait time to see a physician by 88%, from 68 minutes at a walk-in clinic to eight minutes.

Zahid Salman, GreenShield president and chief executive, added: “As a proudly Canadian non-profit health and benefits company, GreenShield envisions a future where all Canadians can achieve their optimal health and wellbeing, regardless of background or circumstance.

“We’re committed to improving health outcomes for all by providing more accessible, convenient, and integrated digital solutions. Our Health Outcomes Report empowers our customers with tangible insights, reaffirming our dedication to championing Better Health for All.”
