Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Bernadette McIntyre (pictured) the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.
McIntyre’s career spans over four decades, with a focus on community involvement and leadership roles, including key positions at Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) and the Wascana Centre Authority, according to a media release.
From 1980 to 2007, McIntyre worked at SGI, holding various senior roles, including assistant vice-president of driver and vehicle safety services.
During her tenure, McIntyre played a key role in shaping policies related to driver safety and vehicle insurance. Her leadership at SGI has been noted for her dedication to customer service and ability to navigate the complexities of the insurance industry.
Her new role as Lieutenant Governor comes after the tenure of the Honourable Russ Mirasty. As Lieutenant Governor, McIntyre will serve as the personal representative of His Majesty the King in Saskatchewan, carrying out ceremonial duties and fulfilling constitutional responsibilities, including granting Royal Assent to provincial laws.
“Her leadership and spirit of volunteerism represent the very best of what Canadians do to build a more prosperous and welcoming country,” said Prime Minister Trudeau. “I am confident she will continue to serve Saskatchewanians and Canadians with distinction in her new role.”
McIntyre has been an active volunteer in the sports and community sectors. She served for 26 years on the board of Regina’s Highland Curling Club and was the first woman to be president of the Saskatchewan Curling Association (now CurlSask).
McIntyre’s work in these areas earned her numerous awards, including the prestigious Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame induction in 2023. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Regina.
