Ecclesiastical Canada has announced the appointment of Dave Smiley (pictured) as chief operating officer (COO), effective July 01, 2021.
Smiley joins Ecclesiastical, a specialist commercial insurance company, with over 20 years of experience in Canada’s property and casualty (P&C) insurance market. He’s no stranger to the COO role, having held the position at Unica Insurance for almost four years, where he led many transformational initiatives.
In his new role, Smiley will report to David Huebel, president of Ecclesiastical Canada, and he will be responsible for driving growth in chosen market segments, providing national leadership to the insurer’s regional operations, and building relationships with broker partners and customers. He will also have oversight of the firm’s HR, claims, and business solutions functions.

Smiley is a respected leader in the Canadian P&C market. He has held several advocacy roles for the industry, most recently serving as a committee member with the Insurance Bureau of Canada, senior VP Governing Council with Insurance Institute of Ontario, and he also sits on the Governing Council with the Insurance Institute of Canada.
