The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group has received the Application Programming Interface (API) Security Standards Certification from the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO).
The certification verifies that the mutual insurer has addressed key security concerns related to API endpoints, ensuring broker partners that their data remains protected during real-time interactions. The Commonwell said the standards ensure robust information security between systems and Broker Management Systems (BMS) via an API endpoint.
Tim Shauf, president and chief executive of The Commonwell, highlighted the company’s commitment to protecting consumer data. “Completing CSIO’s API Security Standards Certification program is the latest example of how we are continuously enhancing value to The Commonwell’s broker partners who proudly serve our communities,” Shauf said.
CSIO’s API security standards are developed by its INNOTECH Advisory Committee and API Security Working Group. CSIO said these committees meet regularly to update the standards to ensure that its members benefit from the latest API security best practices.
Catherine Smola, president and chief executive of CSIO, congratulated the company for its commitment to protecting customer data. “The Commonwell has greatly increased the effectiveness of their real-time data exchange with brokers by decreasing their susceptibility to cybercrime,” Smola said.
The Commonwell joins Definity Financial and Wawanesa Insurance in receiving CSIO’s API Security Standards Certification. Both companies implemented CSIO’s API Security Standards and received the certification in the latter part of 2024.
Meanwhile, Rival Insurance Technology was also granted CSIO’s eDocs Certification last year, confirming the integration of CSIO’s 40 updated eDocs codes and descriptions into the company’s Broker’s Workstation platform.
CSIO is a Canadian technology association representing property and casualty insurers, vendors and more than 43,000 brokers. It oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of technology standards and tools, including CSIOnet, eDocs and My Proof of Insurance.
