CHES Special Risk has announced the expansion of its specialized insurance solutions for oil and gas contractors, welders, and related trades in Alberta, as it seeks to address the unique risks in one of Canada’s most critical industries.

The announcement comes alongside the opening of a new office in Edmonton, enabling CHES to provide localized expertise and service to brokers and clients. The expansion reflects CHES Special Risk’s commitment to Alberta’s vital oil and gas sector, where demand for skilled contractors and welders continues to rise alongside the need for comprehensive insurance coverage.

The MGA’s program offers a suite of policies to protect against the high-stakes exposures inherent in the industry, including risks associated with high-pressure environments, specialized equipment, and complex operations.

“Alberta’s oil and gas sector is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy, employing skilled professionals who deserve tailored coverage solutions that reflect the unique challenges of their work,” said Gary Hirst, president and CEO of CHES Special Risk.

“Our goal is to be a reliable partner to Alberta’s contractors and welders, providing them with the peace of mind to focus on their jobs without worrying about gaps in their insurance coverage.”

The company’s offerings include specialized policies designed to mitigate risks:

  • Comprehensive liability coverage: Addresses third-party injuries and property damage claims.
  • Tools and equipment insurance: Protects against theft or damage to high-value equipment.
  • Pollution liability: Covers incidents such as accidental fuel or oil spills.
  • Contractor’s errors and omissions (E&O): Mitigates financial losses from project errors or omissions.
  • Commercial auto and fleet coverage: Ensures vehicles used for transporting equipment are protected.
  • Business interruption insurance: Provides financial support in the event of operational disruptions.

For example, an Alberta-based welding contractor servicing oilfield equipment could face risks ranging from stolen tools to accidental pollution. With CHES’s policies, “the contractor can work confidently, knowing that their insurance has anticipated and addressed the unique exposures of their profession,” a news release said.

Founded in 2004, CHES Special Risk began as a managing general agent specializing in entertainment and hospitality insurance. The company has since evolved into a Lloyd’s cover holder and a provider of both niche and standard insurance lines. It supports retail brokers with “A”-rated insurance capacity.
