Canada Life has announced that, through its first-ever virtual food drive, its employees have managed to raise more than $53,000, to be used to help support food banks across the country.
The total is equivalent to over 100,000 meals, based on estimates from Food Banks Canada. Aside from Food Banks Canada, the donations will be used to support similar food security initiatives such as Winnipeg Harvest, Regina Food Bank, Second Harvest (Toronto), Welcome Hall Mission (Montreal), London Food Bank, as well as other regional food banks.
This is Canada Life’s first virtual-based food drive event. About 95% of the company’s employees are currently working from home due to the pandemic, so the charity drive was held online to allow everyone to participate.
“Every year we hold a food drive to support our food banks and this year was no different – except for the format,” explained Canada Life president and chief operating officer Jeff Macoun. “Despite being completely online for the first time ever, our employees once again stepped up in a big way. Knowing these are uncertain times for everyone, I’m so very proud that our employees remained committed to help feed families in need across Canada.”
The virtual food drive campaign ran from May 19-29, 2020.
In April, Canada Life reduced its group health insurance premiums for its employer-sponsored group benefits plans. This was the company’s way of supporting its clients amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
