The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) has plans to bring its pay-as-you-go auto insurance program to PEI.
CAA is launching its pilot project, called CAA MyPace, in Ontario this summer – the program will allow drivers to pay for auto insurance based on mileage. Now, the company plans to expand the program to other provinces and territories in Canada, starting with the Atlantic area.
Although there is no guarantee that the insurance program will launch in PEI, CAA Insurance president Matthew Turack confirmed that the company will be speaking with regulators in all four Atlantic provinces this summer about implementing the program, CBC News reported.
“We’re going to work with each one of them individually taking the experiences we have gotten from Ontario… and really look at what is the right fit for each individual province,” Turack said.
The CAA MyPace program allows drivers to pay for coverage in 1,000 kilometer increments; after securing coverage, the drivers’ cars are then fitted with a USB-sized device which tracks their mileage.
“This allows people to pay for the mileage they’re driving in a verified way but really only get billed when they hit those increments. It gives more control to the driver,” Turack explained.
