Allstate Canada has announced that it is expanding its Usage-Based Insurance (UBI) program, called Drivewise, in Nova Scotia.

Drivewise is a program that utilizes a small wireless telematics device that analyzes driver behavior. If it detects safe driving habits, Allstate can offer the customer premium discounts.

The data measured by the device includes time of day, number of kilometers driven, average speed and information on braking habits. Customers signed up to Drivewise can access their own data through an online portal.

“Usage-Based Insurance offers users the potential of reduced rates while also giving them the opportunity to learn more about their driving habits, as well as the behaviours of others who drive their vehicle,” said Allstate Canada vice-president of product operations David MacInnis. “We hope programs such as this, that reward drivers for good driving behaviour, will help make our roadways safer, while reducing insurance costs.”

Drivers participating in the program will be monitored for a six-month period. The data collected during this period will be used to determine the earned discount (which is up to 30%) that will be applied on the driver’s renewal of his/her policy.

“We designed Drivewise® so that a customer’s premium will go down if they are shown to be a safe driver,” commented MacInnis. “We pride ourselves on offering the highest savings potentials in the industry, while also ensuring that if a Drivewise® customer doesn’t qualify for a discount, their premium won’t increase as a result of participating in the program.”

The Drivewise program has been implemented “to great success” in Alberta and Ontario.
