Allstate Canada has let up to 100 staff go in Ontario this month, an employment law firm has claimed. Allstate declined to comment specifically on the number when approached but did say that the business is “transforming”.
“A number of Allstate employees have been in touch with Samfiru Tumarkin LLP this month, claiming that the company has fired as many as 100 in Ontario,” said Lior Samfiru, co-founding partner, Samfiru Tumarkin LLP.
The law firm has been engaged to look at whether staff were offered “appropriate severance pay”, Tumarkin told Insurance Business.
“A more difficult employment landscape can result in enhanced considerations for compensation,” Samfiru said.
“We are still assessing their termination packages before they sign off on them, to ensure that they haven’t been wrongfully dismissed.”
When contacted for comment, Allstate Canada said that it “is transforming to deliver an exceptional experience to our customers”.
The business evaluates “[its] operating model – our people, processes and technology – on an ongoing basis to make sure it reflects our customers’ needs,” an Allstate spokesperson said.
“When employees are impacted by our transformation, we provide fair severance arrangements and job placement support.”
Last week, Vancouver based insurtech APOLLO Insurance made layoffs, reducing its headcount by around 25%, a source said.
