A woman from the GTA who was left injured overseas will be receiving financial support for a trip back home, courtesy of her insurance company.
Raquel Christensen was riding a motorbike scooter over the Easter weekend in Vietnam when she was struck by a car. The collision left her with a broken pelvis and a fractured spine. Her injuries were so severe that she was unable to leave her bed at the hospital, located next to the coastal city of Da Nang.

Although Christensen, 26, purchased insurance from
Allianz Global Assistance before her trip, the policy only covered for trip interruptions and not medical costs. This would have left her family to pay nearly $50,000 for her treatment, on top of a special emergency flight back to Canada.
Metro Toronto, which previously did an investigative feature on Christensen’s circumstances, inquired to Allianz about the case. The insurer reconsidered the limitations on its policy and has announced that it would help her with her expenses.
“We can confirm that, given the severity of her situation, we have been in touch with Ms. Christensen’s family and will help with the cost of her repatriation to Canada,” Allianz Global Assistance Dan Keon told
Metro in an email.

“We wish Ms. Christensen a safe return to Canada and a speedy recovery once home.”
Keon said that he was not at liberty to discuss how much Allianz would contribute due to the confidentiality of claims.
