AA Munro Insurance, a family-owned and operated insurance brokerage based in Nova Scotia, has launched a Healthcare Heroes Campaign to celebrate the frontline caregivers that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in recent months.

The goal of the campaign is to discover 25 inspiring stories of Nova Scotian frontline caregivers, which AA Munro will then publish via its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter. The nominations – which should be submitted to [email protected] – can come from groups or individuals, including doctors, cleaning staff at hospitals, nursing home workers, home care staff, paramedics and lab technicians. They need to include a photo of the individual or team, a write up of less than 500 words and contact information.

Once AA Munro has received and published 25 stories of healthcare heroism, the brokerage will then select three of the heroes at random to receive a $1,000 thank you grant for their team or organization. The award could take the form of a celebration gathering, an upgrade to a shared workspace, a commemorative plaque, or any other means that might boost morale.

“We’re doing this campaign to help brighten the mood in Nova Scotia,” said Angus MacCaull, communications analyst at AA Munro Insurance. “We had some funds available from sponsorships for cancelled events, and so we decided to honour the caregivers on the frontlines of the pandemic. This is one way that we’re trying to connect with and support our communities while we can’t be there in person.”

AA Munro Insurance can trace its roots back to 1944 when it was founded in a small town called Whycocomagh in Cape Breton. Fast-forward almost 76-years, and the brokerage has retained its local focus, with lots of offices in small communities throughout Nova Scotia. The firm also operates today in PEI and New Brunswick through a dedicated online team. Online or in-person, one of the primary focuses at AA Munro Insurance is community, a notion reflected strongly in the Healthcare Heroes Campaign.

“A broker said to me recently that we’re all in the same storm, but we’re in different boats,” MacCaull told Insurance Business. “Some places like New York City are dealing with a lot of deaths from COVID-19. In Nova Scotia, we’re doing our best to continue social distancing while grieving those lost in the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history, as well as those lost in a fatal military helicopter crash. People have come together to mourn and pay tribute as best we can. Maritimers are known for making it through hardship - and we will make it through all this.”

The Healthcare Heroes Campaign is being coordinated by James Smeaton, owner of Highland Multimedia, on behalf of AA Munro. The brokerage has also received sponsorship and support for the #NSHealthcareHeroes campaign from Wawanesa and Aviva Canada.
