The Municipality of North Perth has announced it is working with Trillium Mutual Insurance and the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to help reduce auto thefts in the area.
A report published on Monday (June 26) said there were 67 separate incidents of auto theft and recovered stolen motor vehicles in North Perth that the OPP responded to in 2016. The authorities spent more than 800 hours investigating these incidents. Notably, 95% of the stolen vehicles involved in these cases had their keys left in them when they were taken.
Trillium Mutual, the City of North Perth, and the OPP “strongly believe that victim action and community awareness on the widespread consequences of preventable auto theft is key to solving the problem,” the release said.

“With over 135 years of insurance knowledge protecting and enhancing farm and community lifestyles across Ontario, Trillium directly sees the cost associated with auto thefts in the area.”
“By partnering with the Perth County OPP and Trillium Mutual Insurance on this crime prevention initiative, the Municipality of North Perth is protecting the security of our residents and ensuring tax dollars are used as effectively as possible to support important municipal services,” said North Perth Mayor Julie Behrns.
“We all have a role to play to decrease the prevalence of preventable auto theft and its financial implications. We encourage you to join our efforts by diligently securing your property and monitoring your neighbourhood.”
“Community safety remains a top priority to the OPP. Residents should take these important steps to deter theft and remain vigilant in recognizing suspicious people or vehicles that may be in their neighborhood. It is important for this information to get to police when the suspects are still in the area. When in doubt - call and have police check it out,” commented Perth County Detachment Commander Inspector Rob Scott.
