One Toronto rehabilitation centre has a message for its clients and insurers everywhere – we are NOT the North York rehabilitation company that has been associated with fraud.

“A different company with a similar name called ‘North York Health and Rehabilitation’ is named in the press release and has been convicted,” says Elizabeth De Sousa, vice president of operations and business development at North York Rehabilitation Centre Corp. (NYRC). “The similarity of the company names understandably may cause confusion. To clarify, North York Rehabilitation Centre Corp. continues to operate in good standing and is in no way associated with North York Health and Rehabilitation or the matters described in the Insurance Bureau of Canada press release.”

In the IBC release, the North York Health and Rehabilitation was correctly identified as having been charged with failing to take reasonable care to prevent the company from making false statements to an insurer and failing to take reasonable care to prevent the company from engaging in unfair or deceptive acts or practices. (See original story.)

The clinic was one of three targeted for fraud as part of a joint investigation that involved police, the IBC’s investigative services arm, and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.

However, the nearly identical name ‘North York Health and Rehabilitation’ has been confused with the innocent NYRC – ‘North York Rehabilitation Centre Corp.,’ tarring the NYRC with the same fraudulent brush – and De Sousa is pleased that Insurance Business is spreading the word to insurers that the NYRC is a trusted rehabilitation company. “Our services are independently audited by third-party services. Clients can be assured that NYRC provides services in accordance with the industry’s highest standards and best practices,” says De Sousa. “NYRC works closely with all stakeholders and we are a strong supporter in eliminating healthcare fraud in the auto insurance industry.”

The principal Jeyakanthan Theivendran of 2216686 Ontario Inc., operating as North York Health and Rehabilitation (also known as Ontario Rehabilitation Clinic), was fined $5,000 in accordance with the Insurance Act as a result of a guilty plea.

In addition – perhaps adding even more to the confusion – the North York Health and Rehabilitation of Toronto was convicted of similar fraud charges, with that case now is before the courts for sentencing.
