Residents of Prince Edward Island can now use digital proofs of auto insurance when requested.

The PEI government’s Superintendent of Insurance recently introduced the change, which allows auto insurers to provide pink cards in digital form. The province joins other Canadian jurisdictions that have permitted the use of digital auto insurance proofs, such as Nova Scotia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon and Northwest Territories.

According to Minister of Justice And Public Safety Bloyce Thompson, the digital insurance cards offer more convenience especially since most people have smartphones that could access the electronic copies. He also said that it will be helpful for officers when enforcing traffic laws.

“Sometimes different drivers didn't have the pink slip when they needed it. So it’s very accessible and it’ll help speed up the process time,” Thompson commented, adding that the use of digital insurance proofs was something Islanders had been requesting.

CBC News reported that while the new rules allow PEI drivers to present digital proofs of auto insurance, hard copies of the proofs remain an option.
