Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) will look into the mysterious circumstances that surround a fire that broke out at Birds Hill Park and left five vehicles in flames.
According to Rural Municipality of Springfield’s Fire and Rescue chief Jeff Hudson, the fire appears to have originated from the engine of a silver sedan in the East Beach parking lot.

Hudson revealed that Manitoba Conservation officers initially attempted to put out the fire using handheld extinguishers, but were unsuccessful. He also told CBC that while there were no injuries, five vehicles were burned and others damaged by smoke. MPI, Hudson said, would investigate the cause of the fire.
CBC studio director Pat Kaniuga was present at the park with his family when the fire broke out. Kaniuga said that because the parked cars were packed very close to each other, the fire easily spread from vehicle to vehicle. He remembered hearing “lots of pops” coming from the burning silver sedan.
Kaniuga recounted that it took 20 to 30 minutes for fire crews to respond.'
