Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has issued a second round of rebate cheques to drivers who did not receive the full amount they were promised.

According to MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley, the insurer ran into a “system issue” while it was attempting to return $110 million of pandemic savings to policyholders in spring. MPI later discovered the error in the collection and disposal of data.

To correct its mistake, MPI will be giving a total of $253,000 to the 9,600 policyholders affected by the error. CBC News reported that the cheques were placed in the mail as early as last week.

“Keeping in mind that we want to make sure that our customers are receiving exactly what they’re entitled to, we went into the investigation and quickly corrected it, and got the second batch of cheques out quickly,” said Smiley.

Each household is estimated to receive between $140 to $160 in rebate cheques from MPI. Smiley added that about 95% to 96% of customers have already cashed in their rebate cheques.

Those who have yet to receive their cheques are advised to contact MPI to follow up on their cheque’s delivery.
